Special Needs: Shrek's two littermates died of Distemper and Shrek has tested positive for it. However, Shrek has never been sick, nor has he shown any neurological signs of distemper. We have had at least three dogs in our program that have survived this disease with minor to no permanent disabilities. Could it be that he lives a normal long life...yes. Could he show signs of Distemper a few months or a year from now....yes. Distemper is something that we don't know a lot about. Do I take a perfectly normal looking, growing, healthy, happy puppy and put him down because of a test result that says he has a disease that could possibly stay dormant the rest of his life? I can't. I am hoping that someone with older, vaccinated dogs or no other dogs will take a chance on him and give him love and a life for as long as he lives.
